Dog Training

Dog Training

Roaring Brook’s Canine College can help socialize your dog and teach him or her important obedience and training techniques. All classes are conducted by Wendy Shaw, a certified dog trainer who has been training dogs since 1997. Wendy specializes in aggression and dog psychology and is also a nutrition and behavior consultant and an obedience and agility instructor. Wendy’s training methods are based on pack mentality and natural instincts, though she incorporates a wide variety of training philosophies into each class.

Class Information

We offer four main classes for dogs and their owners. All classes run for 5 weeks for 90 minutes each night. Each class costs $140 and includes a professional photograph of your dog, which is used in your dog’s diploma. Please call Wendy Shaw at 860–306–3517 or email her at strykerspride@yahoo.com for more information or to sign up for a class.

Freshman Course — This class is designed for puppies, usually under 6 months of age, though exceptions may be made. The focus is on socializing and balancing your dog. Dog psychology is explained, corrections and the walk are mastered, and we work on basic commands: sit, down, stay, come and wait. Topics discussed include: housebreaking, first aid, nutrition, proper teething toys and exercise and many more.

Sophomore Course — Designed for dogs over 6 months of age. The focus here is achieving a balanced dog. Dog psychology is explained, corrections and the walk are mastered, and the basic commands (sit, down, stay, come and wait) are taught and enforced weekly. We also target problem areas such as jumping, excessive barking and other issues. The goal of this class is having overall control of your dog.

Junior Course — This class is for dogs who have completed the sophomore course or have a strong understanding of the topics above. We highly recommend all dogs attend courses up to this level. The focus here is on distraction work: achieving the basic commands (sit, down, stay, come and wait) with lots of distractions. We also target specific problems such as dog aggression, jumping and excessive barking. The goal here is having a balanced dog who is very obedient and follows through with basic commands.

Dog Training Senior Course — This class is for dogs who have completed the Junior Course. The goal here is to perfect your obedience commands and strengthen the bond with your dog. We focus on increased distractions as well as games and tricks. This is a fun class for both you and your dog and it can be used as a stepping stone for canine sports like agility and flyball.

Additional Courses — In addition to the four main classes, we offer additional courses for dogs and owners:
